Big End engine problem Brisbane - WORN OUT
Worn out big end bearings is a normal condition after a reasonable amount of kilometres.
(say 180,000KM upwards) However premature wear can occur if conditions are less than
satisfactory. Failure of oil pumps, oil pump drives, blocked oil pick ups, dry starts after oil
filter changes, low oil levels are all conditions that can result in prematurely worn big end
bearings.
Early failure after an engine recondition or rebuild can be the result of an initial dry start,
incorrect bearing nip or insufficient bearing clearance. In modern engines most of the
premature bearing failures are the result of low oil pressure caused from a blocked pickup.
The blocked pickup is usually the legacy of insufficient oil and filter changes. As
manufacturers extend the oil change intervals to try and lower the servicing costs to
compete with the promotion of lower maintenance costs they are causing many engines to
prematurely fail around 100,000km to 125,000km. Oil and filter change interval of 5000km
is the best and cheapest protection for engines
